An Honest Woodcutter / Honesty is the best policy


Once there lived a poor woodcutter. But he was very honest. He earned his livelihood by selling wood in the market. One day, while he was cutting wood near a river, suddenly, his axe felt into Once there lived a poor woodcutter. But he was very honest. He earned his livelihood by selling maintain his family. He sat beside the river and began to cry bitterly. Seeing this, the rivera axe. But the honest woodcutter did not feel tempted. He said that the axe was not his own one. The goddess again dived into the river and brought a silver axe. The woodcutter told her that it, too
was not his own axe. Now the goddess again dived into the river and brought an ordinary iron ake
goddess became very much pleased with the poor woodcutter's honesty and devotion to truth. So, She gave the woodcutter all the three axes. He sold the silver and gold axes in the market, got a huge amount of money and became a rich man. He thus began to live a happy life.

Money Cannot Bring Happiness


There lived a happy cobbler who passed his days working and singing from morning till night. A
rich neighbour of his was a banker who one day said to him, "How much a year do you earn?" The
cobbler replied, 'I earn enough to make both ends meet." "I am sorry for that. You must be living in
great distress," said the banker. "But I am used to this sort of life and I am happy," said the
cobbler.
The next day the rich banker again came to visit the cobbler. He came with ten thousand taka in a
bag. He said to him, "Look, my friend! I've brought ten thousand taka for you. Keep this money and
remove your distress." The cobbler was greatly surprised. At first he refused to take the money
The rich man told him that he could use the money in times of difficulties. The cobbler at last took
the bag of money from the rich man and thanked him.
Now a new anxiety took hold of the cobbler. He said to himself, "Ten thousand taka is a lot of
money." He could not think where to keep the money. He did not find any safe place to keep the
bag. He dug a hole in his hut and kept the money there. But he always thought that his money could be stolen any time. This anxiety kept him awake and his sleep fled away at night. He even could not devote himself to his work. As a result, his life became more miserable. Peace and happiness vanished from his life. The cobbler gradually realized that he had money, but no peace
of mind.

The Dove and the Ant


Through the forest ran a clear bubbling stream. And under a blade of grass on the bank sat an
ant. She was very thirsty and bent over to take a drink, but as she did so a strong current
snatched her away, carrying her far off down the stream. She tried hard but could not manage to
swim to the bank. She was about to die. A dove saw it while sitting on a tree. Then it plucked a leaf
and dropped it on the river water. The ant got on the leaf and came to the land. She thanked the
dove for saving her life. The ant in return promised to help the dove. One day the dove was sitting on the same tree. There was
a hunter. The hunter aimed at the dove. The ant saw it. When the
hunter was about to shoot the dove, the ant bit him in the leg. The hunter missed his aim. In the
meantime the dove managed to fly away. Thus the ant also saved the life of the dove. Both of them
became good friends. They promised to help each other
in danger.

Slow and Steady Wins the Race

Long ago, there lived a hare in a forest. He could run fast. He would always take pride in his
speed. One day, a tortoise was passing by his house. The tortoise was going without disturbing the
hare. Suddenly, the hare stopped the tortoise and said, "You slow coach! I feel pity for your speed.
But the tortoise said with a smile, "Well, let's run a race." At this, the hare was much amused. So,
he said, "Come along, let's fix a date for the race." They fixed a 'date. A fox came to see the race.
The tortoise and the hare came to the starting point. The race began. The hare began to run very fast. He jumped and jumped. He ran a mile in a few minutes. Soon he found the tortoise far behind him. Then he stopped running. He said to himself, "What's the use of going so fast? Perhaps, the
tortoise has covered only a few yards by this time. So, I can very well have a good sleep before he
comes up." So saying, the hare went to sleep in a bush. The tortoise, on the other hand, walked
and walked. He did not stop anywhere. In the meantime, the tortoise was about to cross the
location of the hare. When he came to the bush, he saw the lazy hare lying fast asleep. He smiled
and quietly passed by him. Many hours passed. The hare woke up. He saw that it was already
evening. He immediately got on his feet. He began to run very fast. But alas! The tortoise had
already gone far. He came in sight of the finishing point. But the tortoise was already crossing the
winning post. The hare felt much ashamed. He then said to himself, "It is true that slow and steady
wins the race."

A King Without a Kingdom/ King Lear and His Daughters

Once there lived a king named Lear. He had three daughters-Goneril, Regan and Cordelia, When
he became old, he decided to divide his kingdom among his daughters. At first, Lear asked his
eldest daughter, Goneril. Goneril smilingly declared that she loved him more than she could say
The king was highly satisfied. He called for the map of his kingdom and drew his finger round
one-third of it. Then the king asked his second daughter, Regan. Regan replied that her love for
him would never end and change. Lear was very pleased and gave her another one-third of his
kingdom. Then it was the turn of Cordelia, his youngest daughter. The king loved her most. So, he
expected that she would express her affection and love for him much more than her elder
daughters. With a great hope, the king asked his dearest daughter. But Cordelia spoke the truth.
She did not flatter her father like her other sisters. At this, the king grew angry and he not only
disinherited Cordelia and but also banished her from his kingdom. Among the suitors, the prince
of France married Lear's dowerless daughter, Cordelia. Then the king divided the kingdom
between the two daughters and decided to pass the rest of his life with his two daughters by turn.
But later on, both Goneril and Regan betrayed their father and drove him away from their castles.
The king became a helpless beggar. He suffered a lot. He became mad out of sorrows. At last,
Cordelia
came forward with French army to rescue his father and they got reunited. Though both of
them died later on, the king realized that he had made a blunder in identifying the true daughter.

A fox once fell into a trap, and after a struggle managed to get free, but with the loss of his brush.
He was then so much ashamed of his appearance that he thought that he would try to convince
the other foxes to cut off their brushes as these were unnecessary for them. With this end in view,
the cunning fox called all the foxes of the jungle in a meeting. When all the foxes came, he told
them that they did not need any brush. According to him, the brush was not only useless but also
ugly. So he asked all the foxes to cut off their tails to get rid of their unhealthy situation. Then an
old wise fox realized his evil trick. He revealed his trick to other foxes. Then all the foxes present
there were about to catch hold of the clever fox. They chased the brushless fox and it ran away, as
his secret plan was disclosed.

There was a crow on a tree with a piece of meat in its beak. A hungry fox sat under the tree. The
crow was foolish. The fox saw the crow was sitting on the branch with a piece of meat in its beak
The fox was hungry. The clever fox wanted to have the piece of meat. He hit upon a plan to
accomplish his evil design. He wanted to flatter the crow. He began to say that the crow was very
beautiful to look at. Its feathers were extremely, glamorous. Its beak was very nice. Further the
clever fox added that the beauty of the crow could not be described in words. The sweet words of
the fox pleased the crow very much and it became overwhelmed with joy. But again the fox said
that the crow was dumb. This is unfortunate. At this, the crow became a bit angry and in order to
prove the futility of his words, the crow opened its mouth to caw. Then and there the piece of meat
fell down from its mouth and the clever fox went away with the piece of meat.

A Friend in Need is A Friend Indeed

There were two friends in a village. One day, they went out to enjoy some relaxed time. They were
passing through a jungle. They were talking about what to do in the event of any danger happened
They told each other that they would not leave each other if they face any danger. There lived many
wild beasts in the jungle. After walking for some time they saw a bear coming out of the jungle.
They became afraid of the bear. One of the friends at once climbed a tree. The other friend did not
know how to climb a tree. He was sure that the bear would tear him into pieces. Suddenly, he
remembered that the bear does not eat dead animals. So, he lay down on the ground just like a
dead man. The bear came to him and smelt his body. The friend stopped breathing. The bear
thought that he was dead and went away. Then the first friend alighted from the tree and came to
the second friend. He said to him, "What did the bear whisper to you?" He said, "The bear told me
not to keep such a friend who deserts his friend in danger. Because a friend in need is a friend
indeed."

Perseverance is the Key to success  

Once there was a boy who hailed from an obscure background. But he was brilliant, diligent and
innovative. He could solve any complicated and serious problems easily. He was physically sound
and mentally bold. His name was Rashed. He was determined to shine in life. Moreover, he was
very loyal to his elders. His father died when he was only eight years old. Then he lived with his
mother and his younger sister Reshma. His mother used to work in the neighbouring house. She
took food for her son and daughter. Rashed got into a nearby, primary school and passed PEC
securing GPA-5. He rose up more and got into a nearby high school. He obtained scholarship, and
his fees were remitted. He did his SSC from science group and scored GPA-5 . With the help of
local people, he passed his HSC scoring GPA-5. Then he got into Dhaka University and did'his
BSc (Hons) and MSc securing GPA 3.80 and 3.85 respectively. Then he took the BCS exam and
was selected for foreign cadre. He joined the job and began leading a decent life. He made his
sister highly educated too. Though he served both at home and abroad, he did not forget his
village. He reached the pinnacle of success by dint of strength of mind. He made his village an
ideal one. For this, everybody of his village prayed for him from the core of heart.
