Fruits are among the most wonderful gifts of nature to mankind. Fruits are rich in vitamins, minerals and nutritional value. Depending on climatic condition and soil characteristics every region has its own varieties of fruits. Bangladesh being in the sub-tropical region has her own varieties of fruits. As we have six seasons in a year different fruits are produced in different seasons. In fact, Bangladesh is a land of fruits. Some of these fruits are sweet, some are sour and again some others taste bitter.

Summer is the season of sweet, juicy and fleshy fruits. That's why, this season is also known as the 'honey season'. Mango, which is also known as the king of fruits, grows in this season.

Mangoes are of different sizes, colours, tastes and flavour. Green mangoes are used to prepare pickles and other delicacies. Jackfruit, our national fruit, also grows in this season. It is the largest fruit in our country.

Its skin is rough and prickly, but the inside part contains a lot of soft, juicy flakes with stones. These stones are also eaten in various ways.

The lichi is another attractive fruit that grows in our country in plenty. It is a small fruit and grows in bunches. It has also rough and prickly skin. When ripe, it takes on a purple hue. Its snow- white soft juicy flesh waters our mouth when it is peeled.

Banana is the all-season fruit in our country. It is also of various sizes and tastes. Different kinds of bananas are grown in our country. Of them the Sobri, the Kobri, the Champa and the Amritasagar are the most prominent.

The pine-apple, the guava, the coconut, the papaw and the palm are also some common fruits of our country. People love to eat these fruits much. The other well known fruits of our country are blackberries, dates, plums, melons and hog-plums. People of all ages love to eat these fruits.

Fruits, that taste sour, are also grown in plenty in our country. They are the tamarind, the kad-bel, the kamranga, the karamcha, the chalta and the lemon. Though they taste sour, they are especially liked by the women. Among the fruits, that taste bitter, amlaki is the noted one. It is very much beneficial for health.

So, we can see that our country is replete with fruits. These fruits not only satisfy the rich people's palate but also provide nutritions to our impoverished people.
