The Old Farmer and His Sons

They were always quarreled with each other and that made the farmer unhappy. He tried to bring them to their senses but failed. Actually they had no unity. At last he designed a plan. One day he called all his sons and asked them to bring a bundle of sticks. The sons brought a bundle. When the bundle was brought, he asked the eldest son to break the bundle. The eldest son tried his level best but failed. Then the farmer asked his second sons to break the bundle. But he failed too. Similarly the third son tried hard but did not succeed. The farmer then untied the bundle of the sticks and he told his sons to break the sticks one by one. His sons took the single stick and broke that very easily. Then the farmer said to his sons, “You see, my son, each of you broke one stick easily. But none of you could break the bundle of sticks. Why couldn’t you do it?” The eldest son replied, “That’s right,” You see the strength of unity my son.’ He said “You must live together and no one can harm you then.” After this the sons perceived the message of their parents and they lived in peach. The farmer became happy.

The Old Farmer and His Three Sons

Long ago, an old farmer lived in a country. He lived with his wife and three sons in a village. His three sons were not disobedient to their father. But they had a bad habit. They always quarreled with each other. One day, the sons of the old farmer started doing the same thing they do every day. They started quarreling again and the old farmer stopped them. He became worried and wanted to teach them a good lesson. He called all of his sons to discuss the matter with them. They all came but the old farmer did not tell them anything. He just told them to bring three sticks and ropes. The old man wanted to give a lesson through an example.
The three boys brought the sticks and ropes for their father. The old farmer tied the sticks together with the ropes and told his sons to break them. The three boys tried a lot but could not break the bundle of sticks. They returned the bundle to their father. The old farmer said nothing and untied the sticks. Then he gave each boy a stick. ‍He told them to break the sticks. This time they all broke their sticks easily. The old farmer told his sons that nobody could do any harm to them if they remained united. Since then the three boys stopped quarreling and became united.
